What is an electronic signature?

According to current U.S. legislation and the Electronic Signature & Records Association (ESRA), electronic signatures or eSignatures are defined as an electronic sound, symbol or process that is attached to or logically associated with a record and executed or adopted by a person with the intent to sign the record. All 50 states have laws that define electronic signatures in substantially the same way.
